Gravel among the Rioja Alta vineyards from Haro

A loop along the farm tracks linking the wine villages west of Haro. You set off from the Barrio de la Estación, cross the Tirón towards Casalarreina and carry on between vines and cereal fields to Cuzcurrita de Río Tirón, with its castle. From there you climb gently to Sajazarra, a walled village, and return via Villalba de Rioja to Haro with the Montes Obarenes in the background. The surface is almost all compacted dirt track, with some stretches of narrow tarmac between villages. There are fountains and bars in Casalarreina, Cuzcurrita and Sajazarra. Best in spring and in autumn, during the grape harvest; in summer set off early because there is hardly any shade. After heavy rain, the clay sticks to your tyres. During the harvest, watch out for tractors and trailers on the tracks.
