The route
From the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma to the Roque de los Muchachos, next to the observatories on the rim of the Caldera de Taburiente. A huge climb on tarmac: it starts among houses and the mid-slopes, continues through the pine forest and ends above the sea of clouds, with the caldera on one side and, on clear days, Tenerife and the Teide on the horizon. There are no services at the top: stock up on water and food in Santa Cruz or in the villages at the start. Cold, wind and fog at the summit are common even in summer, so bring warm clothing for the descent. The road may close in winter due to ice or snow: check before you set off. The best season runs from spring to autumn.
