The route

The climb to Collado Espina and Los Machucos from Bustablado, on the side the Vuelta made famous. It is a very narrow road, with grooved concrete sections and brutal ramps between meadows and Pas huts. Fit the shortest gearing you have and climb without rushing: on some stretches it is hard to stay on the bike. At the top is the monument to the Pas cow. Watch out for free-roaming livestock, fog and wet surfaces, which are very slippery on the descent. Best from May to October and with dry roads. Take water from the valley: there is nowhere to stop on the climb.

Track based on OpenStreetMap (signposted climb CIMA CA18) (ODbL).
