On Saturday 31 October, the mud of Amurrio (Álava) opened the hard part of the winter. The Amurrioko Ziklo-Krossa, which remembers José María Basualdo, three-time Spanish cyclocross champion, was one of the rounds of the Spain Cup. In this summary of the 2026 Amurrio cyclocross you'll find who won in elite, how the race went and where you can watch or ride the next one.

2026 Amurrio cyclocross results: the elite podium

Elite women: Sofía Rodríguez

Sofía Rodríguez took the women's race by 12 seconds over Sara Cueto. Lucía González, who won the previous edition in Amurrio, completed the podium at 22 seconds. It was the kind of race cyclocross fans love: three riders together until the last laps and the gap made in the mud and on the running sections.

Elite men: Felipe Orts

Felipe Orts won on his season debut in the national calendar. He broke the race open on the second lap, when he dropped Raúl Mira, who came in as Cup leader, and rode alone to the finish. Mira finished second at 31 seconds and Rodrigo Inguanzo third at 1:05.

The full results for every category (junior, under-23, masters and youth) are in the calendar of the Real Federación Española de Ciclismo, on the event page.

Why Amurrio is so addictive

Amurrio is one of the most traditional events in Basque cyclocross. The circuit mixes meadow, tight bends, short climbs you run up with the bike on your shoulder and, almost always, mud. It's real cyclocross: you win with technique, with a cool head to choose your line and with legs to run when the wheel no longer grips.

It's also an event for everyone. Youth, junior, masters and elite all race on the same day, so it's a good place to see up close how to clear an obstacle, how to do a bike change in the pits or how to get off the bike without losing rhythm. If you're tempted to try, watching it live is the best lesson.

What's left of the Spain Cup of cyclocross

After Amurrio, the Spain Cup heads to the Mediterranean and Madrid. These are the events you have in the bicis.net calendar, with the date from each organiser's official website:

14 November 2026Darkcros Gran Premi Les FranquesesLes Franqueses del VallèsCataluña
5 December 2026Ciclocross Internacional Ciutat de XàtivaXàtivaComunidad Valenciana
6 December 2026Trofeo Rafa Valls Fira de Tots SantsCocentainaComunidad Valenciana
8 December 2026Tr3ce Bike ArroyomolinosArroyomolinosComunidad de Madrid

The next one is Les Franqueses del Vallès, on 14 November. The December bank holiday brings three events in four days, with Xàtiva and Cocentaina on the same weekend. If you live in the Comunitat Valenciana or fancy a trip, it's the best time of year to watch cyclocross.

More cyclocross this winter

Besides the Cup, the calendar has regional and local events: the Carlet cyclocross on 8 November, Cervera del Maestre on 15 November, the Comunitat Valenciana Regional Championship in Castalla on 28 November and Tous on 20 December. And on 17 January 2027, the World Cup returns to Benidorm, with the best in the world on a circuit by the sea.

Feeling the itch? Here's how to start in cyclocross

Watching Amurrio from the tape makes you want to try, and it's easier than it looks. For your first rides a gravel bike or a used cyclocross bike will do, with knobbly tyres and lower pressure than you'd run on the road. The rest you learn by training: getting off and on the bike while moving, carrying it on your shoulder and not braking in the mud.

You have it all, step by step, in our guide to getting started in cyclocross: which bike works for you, how to set it up and which events are good for your debut.

And you don't have to start on your own. The bicis.net directory has 367 clubs with cyclocross among their disciplines (data as of 4 November 2026, from Cycling in figures). Many run skills sessions at weekends. It's the quickest way to learn and to find a group for the winter.
