The route

A way to cross half of Menorca without touching the Me-1. You leave Maó on the Camí d'en Kane, the road built on the orders of the British governor Richard Kane in the 18th century, today a narrow, quiet country lane between dry-stone walls, wild olive trees and pasture, with the odd gentle rise. On reaching es Mercadal comes the island's only serious climb: the few kilometres up to the Monte Toro sanctuary, the highest point in Menorca, with the whole island in view from the top. It's all on tarmac. Water and bars in Maó and es Mercadal, and a café next to the sanctuary. Good all year round except on days of strong tramontana wind, which you really feel on the open stretches; in summer, go early to beat the heat. On the Camí d'en Kane, respect the farms: beyond es Mercadal the old road enters private property and there is no right of way.
