The route

Where it goes

A 13.6 km loop through the inland hills of O Salnés, starting and finishing in Meis. It's route R10 of the Centro BTT O Salnés and runs almost entirely on tracks (94 %), with the odd short stretch of singletrack and very little tarmac. You start by climbing north on forest tracks among eucalyptus and pine, turn round at the top and head diagonally down to the south-west, passing hamlets and open areas with views over the valley, before returning to the start.

The official Centro BTT signposting says 17.4 km. Our route follows the loop mapped in OpenStreetMap, which is somewhat shorter: if you follow the signs on the ground, expect a few more kilometres.

Where it bites

It's +301 m in total, spread over short, back-to-back climbs and descents. The highest point is at 479 m. The hardest kilometre averages 6.8 %: nothing long, but you'll feel it on loose tracks. The descents have rocks and roots in places: stay alert and make sure your brakes are in good shape.

Where to stop

There are several fountains near the route, according to OpenStreetMap, but it's best to set off with a full bottle. Bars and shops are in Meis and the surrounding parishes, not on the route: save the mid-ride coffee for the end.

When to go

Spring and autumn, when there hasn't been heavy rain. After several days of storms, the tracks get muddy and the descents get tricky. In summer, go early in the morning or late in the afternoon. During the hunting season, check local notices.

Getting there

You can park in Meis, next to the start. By train, the nearest station is Vilagarcía de Arousa, on the Santiago–Vigo line; from there it's only a few kilometres by road to Meis. Ask beforehand whether your train takes bikes.

MTB route signposted by the Centro BTT O Salnés (R10) through the hills inland in the area, in Pontevedra. Just over 17 km of tracks and paths through woodland, hamlets and open ground, with linked climbs and descents. It is an intermediate route, with some singletrack sections where you need to stay alert. Take water and something to eat: the villages lie off the route. The best seasons are spring and autumn without heavy rain; after stormy days, mud makes the descents tricky. The signs on the ground come first.
