If you're looking for bike shops in Cantabria, you're spoilt for choice: the bicis.net directory has 25 businesses for cyclists in the region, with 22 bike shops and 22 workshops (data as of 2 November 2026). Almost all of them sell and repair, so whichever is closest works just as well for buying as for getting your bike ready before winter.
Here's where they are, what else there is besides shops, what to ask for at this rainy time of year and where to try out your bike afterwards, because in Cantabria the climbs start almost at your front door.
How many bike shops there are in Cantabria
The count comes from the bike shops in Cantabria directory, which brings together businesses from OpenStreetMap and those that sign up on bicis.net. A business that sells and repairs counts in both columns: that's why shops and workshops almost match.
| Type of business | Businesses in Cantabria |
|---|---|
| Bike shops | 22 |
| Bike workshops | 22 |
| Accommodation for cyclists | 2 |
| Bike rental | 1 |
| Guided tours | 1 |
| Bike fitting and coaching | 1 |
| Total businesses | 25 |
The data comes from bicis.net's "Ciclismo en cifras" (shops and workshops by province, as of 2 November 2026). Business data: © OpenStreetMap contributors.
What's most lacking is rental: there's only one in the directory. If you're coming from elsewhere to ride, the safest bet is to bring your bike or book well ahead.
Where they are: from the Bay of Santander to Campoo
The shops are spread across the valleys where most people live. You don't need to go to the capital to find one with a workshop.
Santander and the bay
Santander has the largest group, and around the bay you'll find more in Camargo, Igollo and Boo de Guarnizo. It's the area with the most to compare if you're buying a new bike or want a second opinion on yours.
Torrelavega and the Besaya valley
In Torrelavega, Sierrapando and Los Corrales de Buelna there are shops handy for the Besaya greenway and the inland climbs. If you're heading for Palombera or Campoo, they're on your way.
The eastern coast
Laredo, Colindres, Santoña, Ampuero and San Miguel de Meruelo each have their shop. It's the gateway to the Asón valley and climbs like La Sía or Alisas, and Los Machucos, climbed from Bustablado.
The west and Campoo
Cabezón de la Sal has shops at the start of the Saja, and in Matamorosa, next to Reinosa, there's one for anyone riding Campoo and the Ebro reservoir. In Sarón there's another, between the bay and the Pas valleys.
What to ask your shop for in autumn and winter
In Cantabria you ride in the wet for much of the year. Before the toughest months arrive, it's worth visiting the workshop and asking for four specific things:
- Brakes: have them check pad wear and, if they're discs, ask whether switching to metallic pads for the mud makes sense.
- Drivetrain: chain, sprockets and chainrings suffer with rain and the salt on coastal roads. Replacing a worn chain in time saves you replacing the whole groupset.
- Tyres: on the wet tarmac of the climbs, a tyre with a bit more grip and lower pressure makes a difference on the descents.
- Lights and mudguards: it gets dark early and the valley tracks come out muddy. Front and rear lights and a pair of mudguards transform your winter.
Call before you go: many are small shops with split opening hours, and in autumn the workshop usually has a queue.
New or second-hand?
If you're looking for a bike and don't want to spend what a new one costs, look at second-hand too. On bicis.net, a used mountain bike asks a median of €825 and a road bike €1,150 (220 active listings, data as of 2 November 2026). It's what sellers ask, not the final price.
If you buy used, lean on your shop: many will check the bike before you pay or tell you what it needs. And if you buy new, ask what's included in the price: first service, gear adjustment and who handles the motor's technical service if it's an e-bike.
Where to try out your bike in Cantabria
bicis.net has 22 bike routes in Cantabria with GPX, 448.2 km in total. Among them are 12 climbs and 2 greenways totalling 54.8 km, and the average elevation of its routes is 744 m: almost everything here goes up.
To start without hills
The Vía Verde del Pas gives you 34.6 almost flat km beside the river, good for trying out a new bike or riding with kids. The Besaya one is shorter and also flat.
For your legs
The Cantabrian climbs have names of their own: San Glorio from Liébana, the Portillo de Lunada through the Pas valleys, Palombera from Cabuérniga, Alto Campoo, La Sía and Los Machucos, which calls for low gears. And if gravel is your thing, you have Valderredible and the Ebro reservoir.
Before you set off, check the riding weather in Santander: on the coast and on the climbs the day can be very different.
