The route

The classic Gredos pass between the Tiétar and Alberche valleys, up the southern side. The road zigzags up the hillside from Cuevas del Valle, and from many of the bends you can see the Roman road running below. The gradient is steady with no extreme ramps, and higher up the pine forest opens out with views over the valley. Water and bars in Cuevas del Valle and Mombeltrán; at the top there is little or nothing. Best in spring and autumn: in summer the south face gets very hot from mid-morning, and in winter there can be ice at the top. There is weekend traffic towards Arenas de San Pedro: ride with lights.

Track based on our editorial design over OpenStreetMap (CIMA AV09 climb track) (ODbL).
