The route

The climb the Vuelta has turned into a classic in the Sierra de Béjar. You start in Béjar, join the Candelario road and, once past the village, the serious part begins: the ski resort road climbs through oak woods and then across open hillside to the La Covatilla car park, above 1,900 metres. The last kilometres are the hardest, with no shade and no shelter from the wind. Get water and coffee in Béjar or Candelario: at the top, outside the ski season, there is usually nothing open. The best time is from late spring to early autumn; in winter the upper road can have snow or ice and the ski resort has priority. Bring warm clothing for the descent.
