The route

One of the most beautiful climbs in Salamanca, up to the sanctuary crowning the Peña de Francia, above 1,700 metres. You start in El Cabaco on a quiet road through oak woods and, once you cross the La Alberca road, the final part begins: a narrow road that coils around the peak with tight bends and views over Las Batuecas and the Sierra de Gata. At the top is the sanctuary, with its guesthouse. Water in El Cabaco; there are no reliable fountains on the climb. Best from May to October: in fog or wind the upper part is very exposed, and in winter the final road may be closed by snow. Descend carefully: the surface on the final stretch is narrow, with gravel on the bends.

Track based on our editorial design over OpenStreetMap (CIMA SA06-1 climb track) (ODbL).
