The route

Where it goes

You set off from Pola de Somiedo, the main town of the municipality, and take the road up the Saliencia river valley. It's 18.6 km of tarmac with +1,101 m of elevation gain, finishing at La Farrapona, at 1,709 m, the pass that separates Somiedo from León. It's an out-and-back route: at the top you turn round and descend the same way.

The first half runs along the valley floor, among meadows, thatched teito huts and small villages. The second opens up into high mountains: limestone, pastures and, close to the end, the Saliencia lakes. The whole route lies within the Somiedo Natural Park.

Where it bites

The average gradient is 5.9 %, but it isn't steady. Down in the valley you can find your rhythm, and it's the upper section that really hurts, with ramps above the average: the toughest kilometre on the route sheet reaches 9.6 %. Save your strength for the last third and check the profile before you set off.

Where to stop

There are no services at the top. Stock up on water and something to eat in Pola de Somiedo, which has bars, shops and places to stay, or in the villages along the valley before the hard part begins. On the way down, Pola is the natural place for lunch.

When to go

From June to October. Outside those months there may be snow in the upper section. In summer cars drive up to the lakes and there's loose livestock on the road, so descend calmly and watch every bend. Even if it's hot down below, it's cooler at the top: bring a windproof for the descent.

Getting there and parking

The easiest option is to park in Pola de Somiedo and start there. The train doesn't reach Somiedo: the handiest Renfe station is Oviedo, a little over an hour's drive away, so you'll need a car for the last stretch.

Before you go, check the weather for your ride and the other bike routes in the area.
