The route

Signposted CIMA AS13 climb to the Puerto de Somiedo, the road that crosses the Cantabrian mountains towards León through the Parque Natural de Somiedo. It's a long climb with a sustained gradient, on tarmac, through woods, hay meadows and brañas with teito-roofed huts. There are no services at the top: take water and something to eat from Pola de Somiedo, the last village with bars and shops. The best time is May to October; in winter there may be snow and ice, and in fog visibility drops a lot. Watch out for loose livestock on the road.
