The route

A climb on the AS-264 from Arenas de Cabrales up to Sotres, the highest village in the Asturian Picos de Europa. The first kilometres follow the Cares gorge almost on the flat as far as Poncebos, where the Ruta del Cares footpath begins and the Bulnes funicular leaves from. From Poncebos the road leaves the river and climbs the hillside through ramps and hairpin bends, with the central massif in view, all the way to the village. The tarmac is in good condition but narrow, with some tourist traffic in summer and at weekends: best ridden early in the morning. Water and bars in Arenas, Poncebos and Sotres. The best time to go is May to October; in winter there may be ice and snow on the upper section. Watch out for loose livestock on the road and on the descent, which is fast with tight bends.
