The route

A short, hard climb to the antennas on the Sierra de Montánchez, listed as a CIMA climb (CC04), south of Cáceres. From the village, with its castle above, the service road climbs towards the antennas with ramps that call for a low gear and few places to recover. It's a great finale to a ride across the Cáceres plains: at the top you can see the Extremadura peneplain in every direction. In Montánchez there are fountains and bars for a coffee. The road is narrow and quiet, but the tarmac may be broken or gravelly: descend slowly. Avoid the middle of the day in summer and days with strong wind, which you really feel at the top.
