The route

The Tornavacas climb up the head of the Jerte valley, listed as a CIMA climb (CC03). The pass links the Jerte with the Corneja valley, already in Ávila, on the N-110: a wide road with good tarmac and a hard shoulder for much of the way, but with some through traffic, especially at weekends. The gradient is gentle and steady, ideal for climbing at your own pace and looking back at the valley and its cherry trees. In Tornavacas there are fountains, bars and shops to get ready for the climb. In spring, with the cherry trees in blossom, the valley fills with people: start early. In winter the top section may have snow and ice. Take lights and visible clothing because of the traffic.
