The route
The route
You set off from Atzeneta del Maestrat, in inland Castellón, and take the CV-170 north-west. The first kilometres cross terraces of almond and olive trees held up by dry-stone walls. Little by little the road gains height, pine forests appear and the landscape turns mountainous.
The climb goes over the El Vidre pass and comes out on the Vistabella plateau, now above 1,200 m: cereal fields, isolated farmhouses and Penyagolosa keeping watch on your left. The last stretch to the village is almost flat, your reward for a long climb.
Where it bites
It's 23.8 km with +1,011 m and an average of 4.2%. There are no brutal ramps: the toughest kilometre is around 6.9%. The challenge is the distance, with more than an hour of climbing for most riders. Ride at your own pace and eat before you get hungry so you don't bonk.
Where to stop
Atzeneta and Vistabella have bars, a shop and a fountain. Between the two villages there are hardly any services, so set off with both bottles full. In Vistabella you can refuel before heading back.
When to go
Spring and autumn are perfect. In summer the valley gets hot: start early. In winter the Vistabella plateau is one of the coldest places in the Valencian Community and there can be ice and snow. Always bring something warm for the descent.
Parking and getting there
Park in Atzeneta, near the plaza Mayor, where you'll also find the tourist office. There's no train nearby: the closest station is Castelló de la Plana, about 40 km away by road, a good option if you want to make the ride longer.
