The route

The Honduras climb from its Hervás side, in the Ambroz valley, listed as a CIMA climb (CC10). You leave the village, with its Jewish quarter and fountains to fill your bottles, and climb a narrow, quiet road among chestnut and oak trees that open out as you gain height. The gradient is steady, with no impossible ramps: find your rhythm from the bottom. At the top the views open out over the Jerte valley, on the other side. There's nowhere to buy anything on the climb: fill up with water in Hervás. In autumn the chestnut trees are at their best; in winter there may be ice or snow higher up and in summer it's best to set off early. Descend carefully: the tarmac is narrow and twisty, and there may be loose livestock.
