Second-hand Specialized Epic: price and what to check

If you're looking for a second-hand Specialized Epic, here's what you need to know before you pay: which generation it is, which parts wear out and how much people are asking today for a used mountain bike on bicis.net. The Epic is Specialized's cross-country (XC) and marathon full-suspension bike: short travel, low weight and a position designed for pedalling fast for hours. That's why it's so popular with riders who do MTB sportives, XC races or long rides on fast tracks and trails.
A well-kept Epic lasts many years, but there are points worth checking carefully. The most important thing is knowing which era it's from, because the rear suspension changes and, with it, what you need to check.
The Epic generations: how to tell which one it is
The Epic has been in the range since the nineties, but on the second-hand market you'll mainly see these:
Epic FSR with Brain (up to 2017)
Frame with the brand's pivot on the chainstays (the FSR system) and a Brain shock, which firms up on its own on the flat and opens when it takes a hit from the terrain. The oldest versions have 26-inch wheels and 29-inch wheels came in early last decade. They still ride well, but many have lots of kilometres on them: the maintenance history matters more than the price.
Epic from 2018 to 2020
The 2018 season brought a new Epic: it drops the chainstay pivot, uses flexing seatstays and debuts a redesigned Brain. 29-inch wheels only. This era also saw the Epic EVO appear as a more trail-oriented build on the same frame.
Epic and Epic EVO from 2020 (2021 season)
In mid-2020 Specialized split the two: the Epic keeps the Brain and the Epic EVO becomes a bike in its own right, without Brain, with a little more travel and more relaxed geometry. If you want to race, go for the Epic; if you want long rides with technical trails, the EVO usually fits better.
Epic World Cup, Epic 8 and Epic 8 EVO (from 2023)
In 2023 came the Epic World Cup, the race version with less travel. Then came the Epic 8, which drops the Brain in favour of a handlebar lockout (on S-Works models, RockShox's Flight Attendant electronic system). Alongside it is the Epic 8 EVO, with a more trail-oriented character. These are the most expensive to find used and the ones that have been on the market for the shortest time.
To be sure, ask for a photo of the serial number (under the bottom bracket) and, if you have an official Specialized shop nearby, ask them to confirm the year and model with it.
What to check on a used Specialized Epic
The shock and the Brain
The Brain is what sets the Epic apart most and what needs the most maintenance. Check that the bike feels firm on the flat and that when you drop off a kerb the suspension works without harsh knocks or noises. Ask when the shock was last serviced and who did it: a Brain that hasn't been to the workshop for years can be expensive to put right. On the ones without Brain (EVO and Epic 8), check that the handlebar lockout opens and closes properly.
The fork
Look at the stanchions: no scratches, no oil on the seals and no play when you brake with the front wheel on the ground. Some Epics also have a Brain at the front; ask for its last service too.
Bearings and seatstays
Lift the rear wheel and move it sideways: there should be no play in the swingarm bearings. On Epics with flexing seatstays, check that area carefully for cracks or impact marks, because it works with every movement of the suspension.
The frame
Many Epics are carbon. In good light, check the bottom bracket area, the chainstays and the down tube, where stones hit. Be wary of deep marks or retouched paint with no explanation. Ask for the invoice: it helps you with the serial number and the warranty, if it still has one.
Drivetrain, brakes and wheels
An XC bike has usually done a lot of kilometres. Check the wear on the chain, chainrings and cassette, the state of the pads and rotors, and that the wheels spin true and without noises from the hubs.
We're not aware of any general official recall of the Epic frame. If you're worried about a specific fault, the official shop can check it with the serial number.
How much is a second-hand Specialized Epic worth
The price depends on the generation, the frame (carbon or aluminium), the build (from entry level to S-Works) and the condition. As a reference, these are the prices being asked today for used mountain bikes on bicis.net:
| Category | Listings | One in four asks less than (€) | Median (€) | One in four asks more than (€) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mountain bikes | 101 | 450 | 850 | 1,400 |
Data from Ciclismo en cifras, as of 4 November 2026: this is what sellers ask, not the final price. An Epic usually sits at the top of the table or above it, because it's a full-suspension race bike. An old Epic FSR with lots of kilometres may be close to the median; a nearly new Epic 8, well above it.
To fine-tune it for your case, try the bicis.net bike valuation tool and have a look at the guide on how much a used Specialized is worth, with the brand's other families.
Before you pay: the test ride
Get on the right size and test it off-road, not just in the street: climb a short rise out of the saddle, ride down something rocky and brake hard. Listen for creaks from the headset, bottom bracket or swingarm. If something doesn't add up, take it to a workshop before closing the deal. Frequently asked questions
What is the Brain on the Specialized Epic?
It's a system from the brand that firms up the suspension when you pedal on the flat and opens it automatically when it takes a hit from the terrain. Epics have it up to the 2021 generation; the Epic 8 replaces it with a handlebar lockout.
Second-hand Epic or Epic EVO?
The Epic is for racing and fast rides. The Epic EVO has a little more travel and more relaxed geometry, and works better if your rides include technical trails. Choose by terrain, not by price.
How much do people ask for a used mountain bike on bicis.net?
The median is €850, with 101 listings as of 4 November 2026. One in four asks less than €450 and one in four, more than €1,400.
How do I know what year an Epic is?
Look at the serial number under the bottom bracket and ask for the invoice. With the serial number, an official Specialized shop can confirm the model and year.
