Bizkaia is ridden between the estuary, the coast and hills that rise just a few kilometres from the sea. That means climbs from the very first pedal stroke, frequent rain and a bike that's grateful for a good workshop nearby. Here are the bike shops in Bizkaia listed in the bicis.net directory: how many there are, where they are and how to choose yours.

Where they are: from the estuary to Urdaibai
Most businesses are concentrated where most people live, around the estuary and Greater Bilbao. But there's a shop or workshop in a good number of the districts:
- Bilbao: the hub with the most businesses. Handy if you get around the city by bike or want to compare several shops in one morning.
- Left bank: Barakaldo, Sestao, Portugalete and the Trápaga valley. An area with lots of road groups heading out towards Las Encartaciones.
- Right bank and coast: Getxo, Leioa and the towns of Uribe Kosta, with rides out towards Sopela, Plentzia and the coast road.
- Inland: Basauri, Galdakao and the Duranguesado, at the foot of the Urkiola hills.
- Busturialdea: Gernika and the Urdaibai reserve, for those riding towards Bermeo, Mundaka or Monte Oiz.
If you live in a small town, search the directory by your municipality: you may have a workshop closer than you think.
Why go: what riding in Bizkaia asks of you
A tune-up designed for the rain
Bikes get wet a lot here. Chain, cables, bearings and brake pads suffer more than in dry areas. Ask the workshop to check the drivetrain and brakes every few months, and ask about mudguards and tyres with good wet grip if you ride in winter.
Gearing for the climbs
Bizkaia has 22 routes published on bicis.net, with 277.5 km in total and 13 climbs. The average elevation gain per route is 591 m: there's hardly a flat ride. If you're starting out or have an inherited bike with tough gearing, a shop can fit a friendlier cassette or chainrings for the ramps.
Try before you buy
With 44 shops in the province, you have room to compare. Try the size in person, ask about ex-display or previous-season bikes and, if you're buying second-hand, ask them to check it over before you close the deal.
Rent for a ride
There are 4 rental businesses in the directory. They're useful if you're visiting, if you want to try an e-bike before buying one or if you fancy riding the coast without bringing your own bike.
A route to christen your bike
If you leave the shop with a new bike and are itching to try it, the climb to Monte Oiz from Gernika is one of the toughest in the province: 19.65 km with 1,077 m of elevation gain. It's not one for day one if you're coming back from a break, but it's a great challenge once the bike is dialled in. You'll find the rest of the province's routes, with GPX and profile, in the bicis.net route directory.

How to choose a shop or workshop in Bizkaia
- By distance. A workshop five minutes from home is the one you'll actually use. Search by your municipality in the directory.
- By discipline. Not every shop handles road, MTB, gravel or e-bikes equally well. If your bike is very specific, ask before taking it in.
- By waiting time. Workshops fill up in spring. Now, in autumn and winter, there's usually less of a wait: a good time for your annual service.
- Call before you go. Opening hours change and some workshops work by appointment.
