Teruel doesn't make the lists of trendy cycling destinations, and that works in your favour. It has quiet villages, clear skies and a network of old railway lines turned into paths for bikes. On bicis.net there are 59 routes starting in the province, with 2,121.1 km in total, and 5 of them are greenways: together they add up to 291.3 km (data as of 5 November 2026). Here's which ones they are, how long each one is and how to choose yours.

Teruel's 5 greenways at a glance

Greenways make up 8.5% of the province's routes on the site, but they account for a lot of kilometres: just one, Ojos Negros, is over 180. It's the longest greenway on the whole site. The others are a morning's ride or an easy day out.

How to choose yours

If you want a multi-day trip

The Vía Verde de Ojos Negros starts at the old iron mines of Sierra Menera and follows the old mining railway towards the Mediterranean. At 183.5 km and 531 m of elevation gain, it's good for two or three days with panniers, sleeping in the villages along the way. The gradient is gentle, but the wind on the plateau and the distances between villages weigh more than you'd think: plan where you'll eat and fill your bottles.

If you're after a quiet morning

The Sarrión to Barracas section, at 27.9 km, is the easiest way to try Ojos Negros without committing to the whole trip: it climbs little, 139 m in total, and reaches the border with Castellón. The Vía Verde del Norte de Teruel is the shortest in the province, at 21.2 km and 136 m of elevation: good for trying out a new bike or riding with kids who already pedal on their own.

If Bajo Aragón and Matarraña appeal

In the east of the province, the Vía Verde del Bajo Aragón (25.1 km) and the Vía Verde del Matarraña (33.7 km) follow the old Val de Zafán line, among olive and almond trees and stone villages. They climb the most of the short ones, with 235 m and 268 m: nothing serious, but you'll notice the odd long false flat. The Matarraña one is the gateway to Catalonia, where the greenway continues through the Terra Alta.

When to go and what to take

Teruel is high country with a harsh climate. In winter it often freezes in the morning and some shaded stretches keep the ice until mid-morning: set off late, with long gloves and a windproof. In summer the sun is strong and there's little shade on the plateau stretches. Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, little traffic in the villages and the countryside at its best.

  • Lights, always. Greenways go through tunnels, and some are long and unlit.
  • Plenty of water. There can be many kilometres between villages without a fountain.
  • A bike with slightly wider tyres. The surface changes from section to section: tarmac, compacted dirt and patches of loose gravel. A gravel bike, a hybrid or a mountain bike will do better than a road bike with skinny tyres.
  • Patchy coverage. Download the GPX before you set off and carry the map on your phone without relying on data.

Shops and workshops for your bike in Teruel

The bicis.net directory has 5 bike shops in the province of Teruel, and all 5 have a workshop; there's 1 business that rents bikes (data as of 5 November 2026). That's not much for such a large province, so it's best to leave home with your bike checked, a spare inner tube, a pump and a chain tool. If you're coming from elsewhere and don't want to bring yours, book your rental in good time.

If you're left wanting more after the greenway, the province has plenty more to ride: 61% of its routes on the site are gravel, and there are climbs and gorges for anyone who wants to go uphill.
