The route

The gateway between the Axarquía and western Granada. You start low down, among olive and almond trees and the white villages of inland Axarquía, and the road climbs with wide bends up the slopes of the sierra de Alhama, with the La Viñuela reservoir and the sea behind you whenever the view opens up. The finish is the Boquete pass, a cut in the rock through which you look out over the Zafarraya plain, already in Granada. It's a steady climb with no very hard ramps, rideable all year except at midday in high summer. Water and coffee in the villages below and in Ventas de Zafarraya, on the other side of the pass. It's usually windy at the top: bring a jacket for the descent.
