The route

The home climb for anyone riding in Málaga city. You leave the city and soon join the Montes de Málaga road, which climbs through the natural park's pine forests with endless bends and views of the bay every time the trees open up. It's a long and fairly steady climb, great for winter training when the weather on the coast is good. Along the way there are traditional ventas (roadside inns) where you can stop for water or a coffee; up at the pass the air is cooler than below, so bring something warm for the descent. At weekends there's car and motorbike traffic heading for the ventas: best go early. In summer, start very early because of the heat.
